National Measurement Standard:

Measurement standard recognized by national authority to serve in a state or economy as the basis for assigning quantity values to other measurement standards for the kind of quantity concerned

Duties of the Authority regarding the National measurement system

The Authority is the sole authority in the State with regard to metrology and shall act with all competence and powers in order to organize measurement and calibration work inside the state. The Authority carries out the following functions:

  • ​Determine the required national measurement standards according to the state’s needs.
  • Establish the National Metrology Institute (NMI) to keep and maintain the National Measurement Standards.
  • Ensure that national measurement standards in the state are related to the international standards through periodical calibration or intercomparisons.
  • Arrange the issuance of calibration certificates in the State.Ensure the traceability of standards in the state to the National Measurement Standards by offering paid calibration services for different bodies.
  • Determine the hierarchy for standards, the accuracy levels, reservation places and the responsible bodies.
  • Direct the researches and developments towards upgrading the National Measurement Standards to satisfy the changing needs.

National Measurement Standard

Based on the law establishing the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology, which stipulates that the Authority is the sole reference in the State in all matters related to standards and exercises all the powers and powers vested with it in order to regulate the work of measurement and calibration within the State. And the National Metrology System, the Emirates Institute of Metrology was adopted as a national measurement institute in the State to maintain the following national measurement standards:

  • Dimensions
  • Mass
  • Density
  • Flow
  • Force
  • Pressure
  • Electrical measurements
  • Time and Frequency
  • Torque
  • Temperature
  • Humidity

Agreements

UAE has full membership in the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), which officially joined the M-Agreement under Federal al Decree No. 132 of 2014 and signed the CIPM-MRA in February 2016. The National Institute for Standardization was delegate by an agreement (NMI) approved by the Board of Directors of the Authority signed between the Emirates Standardization and Metrology Authority and the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council on May 9, 2017.
